Northsound 1 is a radio station serving Aberdeen and the north east of Scotland. The station is owned & operated by Bauer Radio and forms part of Bauer's Place Network of stations and plays contemporary music from the 1980s to today, alongside news, sport and travel bulletins. Daytime and weekend evening programming is produced and presented from studios in Tullos, Aberdeen. Northsound 1's main 96.9 FM transmitter is located at Durris, near Stonehaven. It also broadcasts on 97.6 FM from the Balgownie transmitter covering north Aberdeen, and on 103.0 FM from Stirling Hill covering the Peterhead area.

Since 15 September 2008, Northsound 1 and all other Bauer-owned FM stations in Scotland air networked programmes on weekday evenings, weekend late nights and overnight from Clyde 1 in Glasgow.

History

Northsound Radio commenced broadcasting at 6 am on 27 July 1981 from converted studios in an old schoolhouse on Kings Gate, near Anderson Drive in Aberdeen. Originally, the station broadcast from 6 am to 8 pm each day. In 1995, the station split its services to become Northsound 1 and Northsound 2. Both stations now also broadcast on DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting – i.e. Digital Radio).

News and Sport

A team of four broadcast journalists produce news bulletins every hour, on the hour, between 6 am and 7 pm weekdays, and between 7 am and 2 pm at weekends. A late night bulletin is broadcast at 10pm every night. At peak times (breakfast and drive) on weekdays, supplementary news headlines are broadcast on the half hour. A five-minute bulletin entitled Live at Five is broadcast at 5pm each weekday.

Dedicated sports bulletins are broadcast at 8am, 1pm and 5:30pm, alongside reports within the hourly news bulletins and a scores & results service during Saturday afternoons.

Traffic and travel bulletins are broadcast during peak travel times (breakfast and drivetime), accompanied by 'Jambuster' reports when there is major congestion at any time.
